Hegemony or Empire?
Did the United Kingdom's influence in its heyday match the United States' today? Two Hegemonies provides an answer; but "empire" might be the better word.

As Tony Blair gets lambasted for backing the Iraq war, it is worth noting that the current strain in U.S.-British relations is hardly the first induced by war. Twenty-four years ago, London was dismayed by Washington's lack of support during the Falklands War -- an episode that shows both how complex the allies' relationship has been during times of crisis and how resilient it can be afterward.
The American century, far from being over, is on the way. The information revolution, which capsized the Soviet Union and propelled Japan to eminence, has altered the equation of national power. America leads the world in the new technologies. Its emerging military systems can thwart any threat. On the "soft-power" side, it projects its ideals and other countries follow. To prevent an information race, America must share its lead; to preserve its reputation, it must keep its house in order.
Antony Blinken has missed a fundamental transformation at work. America and Europe may still share values and interests, but Europe and the world have changed profoundly since the Cold War. The transatlantic relationship must change, too.

BBC World Debate
I thank Dr. Ferguson as the only panelist to suggest Statist responsibility for the conditions that led to the 'economuc crisis' when the others dismissed the subject as "blaming and finger-pointing." To acknowledge the State as a prime root cause would invalidate the accelerated, exagerated power grab by the State(s). The subject of greed was brushed upon, but nobody pointed out that the only check on greed is risk, and when the State artificially masks risk, then greedy behavior proceeds beyond the point where free market forces would limit it or lead to the demise of reckless risk-takers. I'd be honored if allowed to send a short paper I wrote on the subject, lest it be of interest.
