Chinese Influence in the Indian Ocean
I agree that the United States Navy will continue to be a significant factor in the Indian Ocean.After all, even though the American and Chinese navies are about the same size in terms of ships (300 each), the UN Navy has much greater capabilites, and higher quality.
However, I disagree with this letter when it says that China will not play a significant role in the Indian Ocean. They certainly have the desire to do so. And now that they are setting up naval bases in Myanmar (Great Coco Island), the Chinese will have the capacity for action as well. In the medium term, both China and India will have major influence.
Sri Lanka is not a province
Sri Lanka is not a province of India. So It can trade even with the devil if it suits to Sri Lanka.
I think Sri Lanka does not trust india, because of her past behaviour supporting LTTE.
As time goes by, indian influence may decrease and Sri Lanka can act as a soveriegn country to quell and destroy any tamil even sinhalese rebellion in the future.
Indian couvert support to tamils would be disastrous, as it would let sinhalese to fight against tamils and wipe them out.
Indian trick here is let the war drag and it can have influence Sri Lanka for ever.
India is only making enemies in the neighbourhood. Actually india does not have friends in its neighbourhood. As china becomes a super power, neighbours would side with china. This would be a threat to the very existence of india. It is very ease to destabilize india. She knows it.
It is importance that Sri Lanka get help from china and to wipe out LTTE.
Indians can not talk about human rights. They wiped out generations of other communities in Punjab with Sikhs and in Assams, Nargaland…
India must not try to teach sri Lanka how to behave.
