EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Overview
Founded in 1922, Foreign Affairs is the preeminent publication on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy. It is published by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which is a leading independent, nonprofit membership organization and nonpartisan center dedicated to producing and disseminating foreign policy ideas.

The Executive Editor will work closely with the editor in overseeing the strategy, operations, and editorial content for the magazine across all publishing platforms.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • With the editor, developing and executing editorial strategy for all Foreign Affairs content
  • Commissioning, reviewing, and editing content
  • Managing editorial operations
  • Supervising the editorial staff, including setting their priorities and focusing on their professional development
  • As part of the senior management team, representing Foreign Affairs in cross-departmental activities inside CFR
  • Engaging CFR members and the broader foreign policy community as a senior representative of Foreign Affairs

Qualifications

  • Substantial related high-level experience with both print and web journalism
  • Excellent editorial skills
  • Significant management experience and skills, including experience supervising and developing staff
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Substantive understanding of current foreign policy issues
  • Advanced academic credentials or the practical equivalent in international relations or a related field
  • Budget management experience preferred

SOCIAL MEDIA AND AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT EDITOR

Overview
Foreign Affairs is the leading journal in the field of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs. The Social Media and Audience Development Editor will identify and craft story angles to grow Foreign Affairs' following and circulation through social media, newsletters, partnerships, and more. We are looking for someone who has strong experience in using social platforms to promote a publication and build audience engagement.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing and executing strategies to accelerate audience growth, engagement, and traffic from established and emerging social platforms
  • Coordinating the creation of platform-specific content
  • Maintaining social accounts, primarily on Facebook and Twitter
  • Analyzing analytics (Omniture, Google, etc.) to inform social strategy, as well as advising on editorial strategies
  • Advising on headlines to maximize engagement and optimize SEO

Qualifications

  • BA in International Relations or a related field, with high academic credentials
  • A minimum of two years related experience in publishing
  • Demonstrated success driving audience development for a publication, including experience in the management of social media and SEO optimization
  • Strong social-specific writing ability; including the ability to translate in-depth stories into shareable social posts and headlines
  • Expertise in Web analytics platforms such as Omniture, Chartbeat, Twitter analytics, Facebook Analytics, etc.
  • Visual media experience (photography, videography) a plus, including visual media editing skills
  • Knowledge of ESP platforms preferred; ideally with Sailthru
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline driven environment both independently and as part of a team

EDITORIAL ASSISTANT

Overview
Foreign Affairs is the leading journal in the field of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs. Reporting to the Business Administrator, the Editorial Assistant will provide administrative and financial support to the department.  

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to): 

  • Providing administrative support to the department, including scheduling, booking travel, handling correspondence, and responding to requests for information
  • Coordinating the contract process for authors and book reviewers from acquisition through publication and payment
  • Assisting the Books Editor with requesting galleys and sending books to reviewers
  • Assisting with fact-checking of articles for Foreign Affairs
  • Coordinating the review process of unsolicited manuscripts
  • Assisting with budget management, including preparing vouchers for reimbursement and monitoring budget reports
  • Assisting with other research and magazine projects upon request

Qualifications:

  • BA in International Relations or a related field, with high academic credentials
  • A minimum of one year of related administrative experience; preferably in publishing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including proofreading ability
  • Strong computer skills; knowledge of MS Word and Excel required; MAC familiarity a plus
  • Budgetary experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in working with databases and creating systems to maximize efficiency strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment, both independently and as part of a team

PUBLISHING ASSOCIATE, PROMOTIONS

Overview

Founded in 1922, Foreign Affairs is published by the Council on Foreign Relations, which is a leading independent, national membership organization and nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating foreign policy ideas. Foreign Affairs publishes insightful commentary on global politics, diplomacy, and economics from experts with a wide range of views.

The Publishing Associate, Promotions reports to the Associate Director of Marketing, Foreign Affairs, and is assigned to help with the day-to-day tasks of running the magazine. These tasks include working with copy, design, and quality control for subscription marketing campaigns, as well as staging and deploying newsletters and email marketing efforts, working with external vendors, conducting research projects, analyzing marketing data, and occasionally assisting our advertising and events teams as needed.

The position is excellent for a candidate interested in hands-on experience with all the business operations of a multimedia publication that includes print, digital, advertising and events departments. The ideal candidate also has experience with or interest in the field of international relations.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Contributing to the quality control of design and copy for direct mail and email communications, including renewal materials
  • Supporting email and social media marketing campaigns, including creating and updating marketing collateral using Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Assisting with draft copy for subscription marketing campaigns
  • Conducting research projects and working on new initiatives (e.g. a Foreign Affairs store and our new high-end subscription tier)
  • Maintaining and updating house ads in Google DoubleClick for Publishers
  • Acting as a department backup for other email marketing efforts, including occasional email newsletter staging and deployment
  • Periodically assisting with live and remote events, including research, setup of conference calls, production of marketing materials and coordinating with outside vendors

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with high academic achievement
  • 1+ years of work/ internship experience in publishing, media or another industry preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including clear and effective written communication
  • High level of proficiency with Photoshop and Microsoft Office, proficiency with InDesign
  • Proficiency with (at minimum) basic HTML
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Results-oriented self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or interest in international relations and foreign policy
  • Training in graphic design
  • Knowledge of basic HTML

PUBLISHING ASSOCIATE, ADVERTISING

Overview

Foreign Affairs seeks an exceptionally organized and dynamic self-motivated individual to assist with all areas of the magazine’s business operations. The right candidate for this position will pay superior attention to detail and be able to juggle multiple requests across the department. The candidate will be comfortable working with spreadsheets and databases, but also has strong written and verbal communication skills. The role requires significant administrative support, but also provides the opportunity to learn all aspects of the magazine business from production to advertising to digital development.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Manage advertising accounting including insertion orders, billing, collections and tracking of incoming invoices
  • Coordinate incoming advertising materials for bi-monthly print magazine production and regular online ad inventory
  • Provide routine assistance with testing new digital features and launches, as well as weekly e-newsletter production
  • Support advertising and events with administrative duties including organization of client correspondence, scheduling, research, mailing lists and occasional travel arrangements
  • Work closely with the Global Communications and Media Relations team on coordinating press relating to Foreign Affairs publications and events
  • Assist with email marketing campaigns, including creating and updating marketing collateral using Adobe Creative Suite
  • Act as the department backup for other email marketing efforts, including occasional email newsletter staging and deployment
  • Maintain and updating website content for all branches of the business department
  • Assist with live and remote events, including research, setup of conference calls, production of marketing materials and coordinating with outside vendors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
  • One or more years of work experience/internship experience, in the publishing, media or another industry is preferred
  • Strong administrative skills, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience with Salesforce or customer relationship tools
  • Prior experience with magazines or international relations content a plus.
