At 2:00pm, join Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp for a discussion about his Foreign Affairs article on natural gas development, “Don’t Just Drill, Baby—Drill Carefully,” and his New York Times op-ed, “The Right Way to Develop Shale Gas.” Foreign Affairs Editor Gideon Rose will moderate.
In his Foreign Affairs piece, Krupp argues for a third way between total industry deregulation and a complete ban on fracking. “By forging unlikely alliances based on a mutual understanding of what is at stake, the environmental community and the oil and gas industry can create strong, sensible standards that reduce the risks of unconventional oil and gas development -- and ensure that the economic windfall benefits the environment, too.”
In a recent op-ed for The New York Times, Krupp and former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg call for a data-driven approach to reducing air and water pollution from shale gas drilling. “Now the Obama administration is developing a methane-reduction strategy. We’re confident the Environmental Protection Agency will recognize, as Colorado did, that sensible rules are necessary and affordable, and will work with states to write them. And we hope that as in Colorado, industry leaders, elected officials and environmentalists will work together to make shale gas development safer.”
