It has been a scandal of contemporary political science that "methodology" has been developed as a discrete and autonomous field. This survey is even more narrowly and quantitatively construed than its title indicates and excludes some of the most interesting "scientific" research now available. It will interest only those already initiated into the rites and convince no one.
