Obstacles to Mineral Development: A Pragmatic View
By John S. Carman
Pergamon Press, 1979, 200 pp.
These papers by a Canadian mining engineer with some 20 years of U.N. experience deal bluntly and vividly with, among other things, the fallacies of The Limits to Growth, the deficiencies of foreign aid, the damaging changes in Canadian taxation, inappropriate technology, small mining and the prevention of ghost towns. Among many interesting statements, the most important is the drubbing he gives mining companies and host governments for attitudes and behavior which imperil future production.
