Socialism and Democracy in Czechoslovakia, 1945-1948

By Martin Myant

Cambridge University Press, 1981, 302 pp.

The first postwar years in Czechoslovakia receive a partly new interpretation here. Myant finds the system of those years close to "democratic socialism with a human face," with the Communist Party playing the leading role. He also covers in detail the revolution of February 1948 and its aftermath, in which the Communists, with no effective opposition, changed that system to one of a monopoly of power with no democracy at all.
