The International Monetary Fund, 1972-1978: Cooperation On Trial
By Margaret Garritsen de Vries
International Monetary Fund, 1985, pp.
The Fund continues its admirable practice of publishing a detailed history of its activities with only a decent lag after the events. These volumes-which bring the total number to eight-cover troubled years during which floating exchange rates became the norm, there was a new treatment of gold, schemes for reform bore little fruit but much paper, and the importance of the Fund's lending increased greatly, especially in response to payments upset by the oil price. Although the book has been scrutinized by many officials, it is basically the responsibility of Dr. de Vries, who maintains the high standards she set in earlier volumes. This valuable volume of documents includes staff memoranda and analyses as well as material already published.
