The Premature Antifascists: North American Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939
Praeger, 1986, 275 pp.
Mr. Gerassi, an American journalist and scholar, is the son of a general on the Loyalist side. This enthralling collection of interviews with Americans and Canadians who fought against Franco represents a selection from 18,000 pages of transcripts. The majority of the 49 veterans offering their recollections, like most of the 5,000 North American volunteers of whom they were a part, were working class and strongly leftist in ideology. Many were born in Europe or of immigrant parents.
