Israel's Fateful Hour
By Yehoshafat Harkabi
Harper & Row, 1988, 256 pp.
General Harkabi, former chief of military intelligence and later adviser to Prime Minister Begin, calls for a radical shift in Israeli policy in the direction of negotiation for peace with the only logical negotiating partner, the PLO, on the basis of withdrawal from the occupied territories. He has a claim to be listened to in Israel and in the Diaspora because for years he has been a leading authority on the Arabs and their attitudes toward Israel. He recognizes that the hard Likud line on the territories has wide public support, even within the Labor alignment, but feels all the more compelled to label it suicidal. The Hebrew original of the book, published in 1986, has gone through four editions in Israel.
