Shadow Of Heaven: The Life Of Lester Pearson. Vol. I: 1897-1948
By John A. English
Lester & Orpen Dennys, 1989, 414 pp.
This fine opening volume traces Pearson's smooth progression from his late-Victorian boyhood in Ontario, through his service in World War II, studies at Oxford, years as a teacher, rise to distinction as professional diplomat, and finally to his entry into politics in 1948. The theme: how Pearson applied "tolerance, universalism and responsibility," the legacy of his youth, to the transformed world conditions that faced Canada.
