A revised version of a book first published in German in 1977 and still highly dependent on earlier scholarship. Barkai, an Israeli scholar, concentrates on peacetime German recovery, on Hitler's first four years when the economy grew by 9.5 percent annually. Much of the additional state spending went to rearmament, but by no means all. Barkai stresses consonance between Nazi ideology and practice, speaks of organized capitalism in which the economic elite prospered-and accepted the primacy of Nazi direction.
