Come With Me From Lebanon: An American Family Odyssey
By Ann Zwicker Kerr
Syracuse University Press, 1994, 322 pp.
Many will remember the day in January 1984 when Malcolm Kerr, president of the American University of Beirut, was assassinated. Lebanon had been haunted by thousands of senseless killings over the previous decade, but this one hit home for many Americans who had known Kerr and respected his scholarship. Now his widow has written an evocative, moving memoir that begins with the assassination but moves on to portray Lebanon as she and Malcolm had known it, the cosmopolitan Beirut where they had met, and the rich family life that they had shared there. Along the way we learn as well of a remarkable, courageous woman.
