Mr. Laurence, science reporter for The New York Times, was chosen by the Army to write the official press releases on the atomic bomb, and for this he won a Pulitzer Prize. He was present at the explosion of bombs one and three. This is the story of the Manhattan Engineering Project and of the first three explosions, told in only moderately technical language.
