Strategic Surrender

An illuminating analysis of strategic surrender--the orderly capitulation of the loser's remaining forces--as a problem in political theory. Four cases are examined: the French surrender of June 1940, the Italian surrender of September 1943, the German surrender of 1945 and the Japanese surrender of August 1945. The discussion includes the question of unconditional surrender, and the relevance of surrender in a possible nuclear war.
