The Economics of Defense in the Nuclear Age
By Charles J. Hitch and Roland N. Mckean
Harvard University Press, 1960, 422 pp.
In this RAND Corporation study the authors are chiefly concerned to set forth a way of looking at and solving military problems in order to maximize the attainment of objectives with the given resources. They see strategy and cost as being "as interdependent as the front and rear sights of a rifle." Their most illuminating discussion deals with such themes as the availability of resources for defense, the analysis of efficiency in their use, and some applications of their general models to specific problems.
