The Field Marshal's recollections have been long awaited. Volume I opens with his appointment to the War Board in 1910, and carries the story through the autumn of 1914. Volume II is an account of the "war of stabilization" (in contrast to the earlier "war of movement"), down to Joffre's resignation in 1916. The work, which is of particular importance for the study of the Marne campaign, should of course be read in connection with Foch's reminiscences.
