An admirable book which seeks to make available in English the immense amount of documentary and other material that has poured from the press in the last twenty years. Based upon the French, Belgian, British and German official accounts, and on extensive memoir material and monographic studies, it covers the military history of the war in the west from the beginning through the battle of the Marne. The narrative is clear and interesting, the maps are numerous, and there is an extensive bibliography.
