Save America First
Save America First
By Jerome Frank
Harper, 1938, 432 pp.

Mr. Frank, now a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission, thinks we can best create and preserve an enlightened form of capitalist economy in the United States by cutting adrift from Europe, practically and ideologically. We must cease importing our socio-economic and political ideas -- such as Marxism and Fascism -- from the Old World; we must also reduce our foreign trade to an absolute minimum in order that our own integrated economy be no longer dependent on the rest of the world. Mr. Frank's epigrammatic prose is often plausible; yet his major theses seem grounded on dubious historical interpretations and economics. The second half of his volume constitutes a comprehensive blueprint of the New Deal's economic philosophy. There is no index.
