The Martyrdom of Spain

By Alfred Mendizabal
Scribner, 1938
277 pp. $3.00

A history of Spain from Primo de Rivera to the Popular Front victory in February 1936, by a former professor of the philosophy of law at the University of Oviedo. Though a Catholic, the author preserves an objective tone, the principal shortcoming of his approach being that it is almost wholly political. Jacques Maritain, the French Catholic writer, contributes a cogent and important 50-page introduction.
