I Helped to Build an Army
I Helped to Build an Army
By José Martín Blázquez
Secker and Warburg, 1939, 361 pp.

The author was one of the few staff officers in the Spanish Army who remained loyal to the Republic. After serving it until March 1937, he then went to France where he wrote this book, one of the most reliable and important so far published on the Spanish Civil War. His account casts a lurid light on the party and regional jealousies that crippled the Loyalist Government's efforts to organize and equip an army.
