Black Lamb and Grey Falcon

By Rebecca West
Viking, 1941
2 pp. $7.50

This is one of the most interesting and beautifully written books reviewed in these pages for some time. The author, a prominent British novelist and essayist, passed considerable time in two recent years in travelling about Jugoslavia. These two volumes record her impressions and highly subjective judgments of the country, the people and their neighbors. More than that, they give us some of the ideas of universal application which crowded into her active mind as she wandered among the mountains and cities of Southeastern Europe and talked with their argumentative inhabitants.
