Fountainheads of Freedom
Fountainheads of Freedom
By Irwin Edman
Reynal, 1941, 576 pp.

In this very superior book Professor Edman has managed to combine the objectivity of a sound scholar with the passion of a true lover of freedom gravely concerned for its survival in our world. In the first part of his book he reviews the historical development of the democratic idea since classical times; in the second part he presents the texts, in part or in full, of some forty of the great documents which mark the road which western man has followed in his quest for fuller freedom. Professor Herbert W. Schneider, a colleague of Mr. Edman at Columbia University, collaborated in the preparation of the volume.
