The Development of Modern Italy
The Development of Modern Italy
By Cecil J. S. Sprigge
Yale University Press, 1944, 216 pp

The author, onetime Manchester Guardian correspondent in Rome, has produced a very timely review and appraisal of modern Italian history. Though not everyone will agree with his diagnosis of Italy's political malady, there can be no dissent from his conclusion that to create a new Italy will be a long and arduous task, and that this cannot be done simply by turning back the hands of time to the pre-Fascist era.
