Hitler and Beyond: a German Testament

By Erich Koch-Weser
Knopf, 1945
217 pp. $2.75

Dr. Koch-Weser, a member of the German Democratic Party, was one of the creators of the Weimar Republic, was twice a member of Reich cabinets, and became a voluntary exile in Brazil after Hitler took power. In this book he seeks a tenable explanation for the phenomenon of Nazism and for its acceptance by the German people. The conclusions to which he comes agree with neither of the extreme schools of thought on this issue. This is one of the better books on Germany to be written by an exile.
