By John Latouche
Willow, 1945
192 pp. $3.75

This book is the result of a trip through the Congo, made under the sponsorship of the Belgian Government. Mr. Latouche has supplied the text and André Cauvin the many excellent photographs. The former has opened himself to criticism by trying to play down the evil practices associated with the rule of Leopold II. The text and illustrations show how rapidly the African is adjusting himself to certain aspects of modern industrial life, but Mr. Latouche does not say much about the almost exclusive concern of the Belgian authorities for the physical well-being of the native, to the neglect of his cultural, social and political advancement.
