The Discovery of India

By Jawaharlal Nehru
Day, 1946
595 pp. $5.00

Like the Indian leader's other great books, "The Discovery of India" was written in prison -- in this case during 1944. Nehru does not pretend to profound scholarship; his purpose is rather to satisfy his own curiosity concerning India's historical development. Some of his most interesting passages are those in which he discusses recent events, notably as they touch the Congress Party and the nationalist movement.
