The author, a British Intelligence officer, was in charge of the investigation into Hitler's last days and presumed death. He is convinced beyond any doubt that the Führer and Eva Braun died in the Chancellory bunker on April 30, 1945, and that their bodies were burned in the garden above. Some skeptics may not be persuaded by Trevor-Roper's evidence and deductions, nor can all his obiter dicta on the Nazi régime be accepted; but taken as a whole his work is a first-rate piece of historical research, besides making fascinating reading.
