M. Guillain became director of the Havas Agency at Tokyo in 1938 and remained in Japan throughout the war. Though his movements were restricted, he was actually interned during only the last six months of the conflict. His account is valuable despite the fact that he lost his collection of material in the great fire of Tokyo.
