Out of Exile

By Soetan Sjahrir

Day, 1949, 265 pp.

This volume by the Prime Minister of the Indonesian Republic consists of (1) letters he wrote his wife during his imprisonment for nationalist agitation between 1934 and 1938; (2) an abridged version of "Our Struggle," which takes the narrative up through the war and into the early stage of the Republic. It reveals an enlightened and humane man, remarkably free from petty bitterness.
