This is the first of a number of volumes covering the period 1939-1946, the wartime gap in the "Survey of International Affairs." A number of authors have contributed to this useful introduction to the history of the war. The most valuable and original section is probably H. C. Hillmann's study of the comparative economic and industrial strength of the Great Powers.
