An eminent student of Chinese history, now on the faculty of the Australian National University, reports on and interprets the victory of the Chinese Communists. In his view, the present régime has good chances for survival because it embodies, in a manner democracy could not, certain deep-rooted concepts of Chinese society. His interpretation of the American rôle in recent events is questionable.
