Seeking to analyze the physiology as well as the anatomy of Soviet totalitarianism, the author briefly traces the development of the system and settles down to a careful examination of the rôle of the Communist Party, the instruments by which the system is ruled and directed, and the tensions produced by such a system. The Kolarz study, intended only as a popular introduction, is based on a series of B.B.C. broadcasts.
