Two Kinds of Time
This first volume of his Trotsky biography is Mr. Deutscher's most satisfactory work in the Russian field. The raw materials for Trotsky's life are much more adequate than for Stalin's, the subject is more congenial to the author's temperament, and there is, of course, an exceptionally dramatic and tragic quality to Trotsky's career. The final tragedy is foreshadowed in the last chapter, "Defeat in Victory." A subsequent volume will cover Trotsky's later career in exile.
