A Village in Anatolia
A Village in Anatolia
By Mahmut Makal
Vallentine, 1954, 190 pp

A translation of the main portions of two books ("Bizim Köy," Istanbul, Varlik, 1950, and "Köyümden," same publisher, 1952) vividly sketching village life in Central Anatolia. The author is himself a villager and the publication of his first book in 1950 created a great stir in Turkey because of the rather squalid conditions it depicts and because of its attacks on officials. Footnotes to this translation serve to balance some of the author's more exaggerated or one-sided statements.
