While the publisher's blurb calls this a definitive history, the author, head of the Japan bureau of the United Press, more modestly, and properly, disavows the claim. It is, as he says, "a reporter's survey" of the war from its beginning through the first half year of the armistice; a useful, unheated, tentative assessment.
