The first book is a demographic study, based largely on the data compiled by the Japanese during their rule and dealing with the relationship between the growth and structure of the population and the colonial economic program pursued by Japan. The second volume, in a way a supplement, is a study of contemporary demographic trends in Taiwan. Together they provide a useful basis of information for further consideration of the economic and social prospects of the island.
