The Men Who Ruled India: the Guardians

By Philip Woodruff

St. Martin's Press, 1954, 385 pp.

In his second volume, Mr. Woodruff's admirable narrative runs from the Mutiny to the end of British rule in 1947. As the subtitle indicates, the theme of the book is that of a rule modeled after Plato's Guardians--benevolent despots who had, in their best representatives, a strong sense of duty and responsibility.
