The Struggle for Mastery in Europe, 1848-1918

This first volume of a new series, The Oxford History of Modern Europe, deals with the external relations of the European Great Powers from the Revolution of 1848 to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and Wilson's Fourteen Points. Presented in Mr. Taylor's sharp and often epigrammatic style, the book is an exceptionally stimulating review of the heyday of the Balance of Power, though too inclined to reverse all previous interpretations.
