An able and scholarly history of the Mitteleuropa idea--Germany's relations with the other nationalities of Danubian and Eastern Europe. Greatest emphasis, approximately a third of the book, is devoted to the years of the First World War when, in the author's view, the idea first moved to the level of policy and action.
