How the Soviet System Works

By Raymond A. Bauer, Alex Inkeles and Clyde Kluckhohn

Harvard University Press, 1956, 274 pp.

In 1950 and 1951 the Harvard Project on the Soviet Social System interviewed or gave questionnaires to thousands of Soviet emigrés in Western Europe and the United States. The present volume, while not a summary of the data obtained --this work is still in progress--is a valuable assessment of the nature, strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet system as reflected in the information thus gained.
