Roosevelt: the Lion and the Fox

By James Macgregor Burns

Harcourt, 1956, 553 pp.

This addition to the mounting literature on Franklin Roosevelt is a political biography centering chiefly on his first two terms as President. As the title suggests, F.D.R. is seen as an extremely complex character, at times the national leader, at times the shrewd politician. The author, a professor of political science at Williams College, has clearly dug deeply into varied sources to create this portrait of the New Deal era.
