By Frederick L. Schuman
Knopf, 1957, 508 pp

Although Professor Schuman's purpose is to attempt a new synthesis and revaluation, the effect is blurred at times. The author's varying views of today, yesterday and two decades ago tend to jostle one another despite his effort to clarify the major issues of interpretation through numerous editorial footnotes.
