The American Communist Party

By Irving Howe and Lewis Coser
Beacon Press, 1958
593 pp. $6.75

A substantial history of the American Communist Party from 1919 to 1957, omitting, though not disregarding, the underground and espionage activities. The authors have their own political predispositions--the book is dedicated to Ignazio Silone and Milovan Djilas--and the reader may debate a number of their judgments, but they are always interesting and provide much food for thought.
