The French Economy and the State

By Warren C. Baum
Princeton University Press, 1958
391 pp. $7.50

Among the various difficulties France has encountered in recent years, the spotty performance of the economy has been the subject of considerable concern, though relatively little research. The present book, a RAND Corporation Research Study, is chiefly concerned with the pervasive rôle of the state in the French economy. The chapters deal with such topics as reconstruction and modernization, control of economic fluctuations, the tax system, the state as entrepreneur and as regulator.
