The Coming of the New Deal
The Coming of the New Deal
By Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.
Houghton, 1959, 669 pp

In this second volume of his major work in progress, "The Age of Roosevelt," Mr. Schlesinger provides a wide-ranging account of the first two years of the new Administration, 1933-1934. While foreign affairs have been reserved for subsequent treatment the domestic canvas is full enough: the A.A.A. and N.R.A., the rise of federal relief and public works and the emergence of the C.I.O., and with all this, increasing alarm and dismay on the part of the opposition. Of particular interest is the author's subtle and skillful analysis of Roosevelt as President.
