An extensive account--fact and comment--on the troubled events in Algeria from 1943 to 1958. The author has been a New York Times correspondent in the area. He is rather pessimistic about the constructive possibilities of Arab nationalism and has a good deal of sympathy for the situation of the French settlers, who have been in Algeria a long time.
