Image of America

By R. L. Bruckberger
Viking, 1959
277 pp. $4.50

Father Bruckberger, a Dominican priest who has spent eight years in the United States, undertakes, with some interesting insights but also some historical lapses, to interpret American culture and society. Interestingly, he finds our tradition marked by a sense of moderation and pragmatic relativism that has saved the country from the fanaticism of total answers.
