Italy: a Modern History

By Denis Mack Smith
University of Michigan Press, 1959
508 pp. $7.50

This volume in the "History of the Modern World" series is a skillful survey and interpretation of the course of Italian history since Cavour. The basic fragility of this new state and its parliamentary apparatus is well presented and explains much of the collapse into Fascism and even the degree of postwar political sterility.
