The Prophet Unarmed: Trotsky, 1921-1929

By Isaac Deutscher
Oxford University Press, 1959
490 pp. $9.50

In this second volume of his major biography of Trotsky, Mr. Deutscher, a brilliant and informed writer, follows his protagonist's plunge from the heights of power in the Civil War to his banishment in 1929. While Mr. Deutscher is sympathetic to Trotsky, and indeed writes within the general frame of Marxist premises, the book has many valuable insights and demonstrates a mastery of the sources.
